Lonely Planet was founded in 1972 by Tony and Maureen Wheeler. The vision for the business came to them when they were traveling across Europe to Asia And on to Australia. Although they followed the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition route they realized there was a lack of guides to help others explore these countries. They created a 94-page book that covered traveling across Asia on the cheap. It was published in 1975 and was the start of their success. The next book focused on India before they started making guides for countries around the globe. By the turn of the century, they had sold more than 30 million copies of their guides. By 2007 the Wheelers had sold a stake in the business to BBC Worldwide, allowing them to expand further and embrace television production. The Wheelers sold the rest of their share to the BBC shortly after and the company has continued to push the boundaries of travel guides.
