In 1948 Bernard Lewis and his brothers established the company known as River Island. Initially, they sound fruit and vegetables, this progressed to knitting wool and then moved into clothes when they expanded, creating nine stores. At the time they traded as Lewis Separates. In less than 20 years this became seventy stores and they re-branded as ‘Chelsea Girl’. It’s regarded as the first boutique fashion chain. Fast forward to 1982 and further expansion created Concept Men to sell men’s clothing. This merged with Chelsea Girl and River Island was created. Today the stores are going strong and serve customers across the globe.
For many years River Island produced two catalogs a year. They detailed the latest fashion lines and created beautifully illustrated 100+ page brochures. The paper-based catalog is no longer created although you will find the entire stock range online and in-stores. Interestingly, River Island does still produce a promotional catalog that highlights the latest offerings or any special deals they currently have. This catalog can be as long as 25 pages and is available in-store or can be ordered online. Today, River Island produces and sells women’s, men’s, and even children’s clothing.
