The Works discount tips

The Works History

The Works originally started trading in 1981. It was started by Mike and Jenny Crossley as a discount bookstore. In fact, it originally traded as Remainders Ltd. It enjoyed a great deal of success in its early years, allowing it to purchase other outlets, such as Bargain Books and Bookworld. However, the global financial troubles of 2008 took its toll and forced The Works into administration. It was subsequently saved by a private equity firm known as Endless. They’ve continued to build on the original foundations and the Works continues to thrive.

The Works Product Range

It started as a discount bookstore and today the majority of its stock range is still books. However, they have allowed for other items, increasing the footfall of customers and potential profits. Other items in its stock range include toys and games, especially educational ones. They stock an entire range of arts and crafts products and some stationery and home living items. The range is designed to encourage people to read and interact with each other and children. Many of their products are excellent for younger children and parents, allowing them to spend time together. This may be one of the reasons why they remain so successful. Although they’ve never produced a full catalog of stock, they do frequently produce promotional catalogs or brochures. These lists the item that are currently on offer or at new in stock. The promotional catalogs are usually 6-8 pages long and can be picked up in-store.

In-Store With The Works

There are over 500 The Works stores across the UK, you’re certain to have one in your local town. They are usually in the high street and often have one of the best positions. Each shop has a limited amount of space to move around as it's packed full of books and other gift ideas. Stepping into one is like going into a magical wonderland, you never know what you’re going to find. The stores are tidy and there are always several staff on hand to help you find what you’re looking for or make suggestions that can help. That’s one of the beauties about going in-store, you’ll discover things that you wouldn’t otherwise think of. It’s great when you’re looking for that unique gift.

The Works Online

Head to The Works website and you’ll be welcomed by the latest offers, they often have promotions like two items for £10. You’ll also be advised what the current top sellers are and be given some inspiration as to what you should be looking at. This is particularly relevant at seasonal times of the year. The menu option in the top left brings up a list of the different categories, you can click on these to take you through to the subcategories and ultimately the items you want to look at. There are plenty of options to choose from which makes it nice to be able to sit at home and scroll through the internet rather than feel rushed in-store. Once you’ve located everything you want and added it to your basket you’ll need to select the delivery option. It’s possible to click collect at your local store. Occasionally this can be the same day but it’s usually a next day option. If you prefer you can choose standard delivery which takes 6-8 working days. However, if you spend over £30 this is free. Should you need any help there is a useful tab at the bottom of the page. Click the “need help?” and you’ll find a link to FAQs as well as the contact centre. This gives you a link directly to the contact links, primarily email or telephone, although you can write to them by post if you prefer.
