Axminster Carpets discount tips

How Axminster Carpets Began

The Axminster Carpets story can be traced as far back as 1755! This was when Thomas Whitty made his first carpet. It followed a visit to London where he was impressed by the quality of a Turkish carpet. As a weaver, he had the skills and intelligence to work out how to make a similar quality carpet. Thanks to this his carpets quickly became in high demand by wealthy aristocrats. Unfortunately, despite great success, a fire in 1828 destroyed the weaving looms, it bankrupt the founder’s grandson and Blackmores bought the remaining looms and stock. Axminster carpets was re-launched in Axminster by Harry Dutfield, a Scottish man determined to make carpets of the same quality from the same town. During the war, his factory was used to create stirrup pumps and aircraft parts. Post-war Dutfield invested in a woollen mill at Buckfast and restarted the carpet business with the same premise as the original, controlling every part of the production process. The company has continued to trade successfully ever since and is one of the most respected names in the industry.

The Axminster Carpets range

Axminster carpets create their own fleece, washes it, and completes all the other necessary processes before weaving the carpet. There are few companies in the world that can say they do this. Despite the name, Axminster carpets don’t produce wall-to-wall carpeting. Instead, their efforts are focused on making stunning rugs. Of course, many of these are larger than your typical room and belong in stately homes. They have an array of carpets for you to choose from. Or, you can work with their designers to create your own unique carpet. Every one of which is woven to order.
