Blacks Outdoor Retail Ltd technically started as long ago as 1863 when Thomas Black started a sail-making business in Greenock. By 1904 his son took over the business and switched focus to tents and other canvas goods. The company thrived and was a leader in encouraging lightweight camping in the 1930s. The business continued to be a success throughout the 20th century, opening new stores and even purchasing other businesses, such as Millets in 1985. This resulted in the official formation of the Blacks Leisure Group which experienced financial difficulties in 1986 and again in 2009. This led to a takeover bid in 2010 from Sports Direct. The company fought it off but financial troubles prevailed and it allowed JD Sports to take over the business. It has been rebuilt, continuing to trade under the Blacks name, and is making a profit again.
