In World War II Klaus Martens served in the German army as a doctor. He was on leave in 1945 and enjoyed skiing in the Bavarian Alps. Unfortunately, he injured his ankle and then discovered the army boots were uncomfortable, to the point of pain. While incapacitated he designed ways to improve the comfort of his boots, specifically with air padded soles made from old tyres. The use of soft leather also helped. He struggled to sell his idea by himself. However, his friend, Herbert Funck, was intrigued by the idea and went into business with him. In the first decade, 80% of the sales were to women in their 40s. This led to the opening of a factory in 1952 and, by 1959, they started tackling the international market. The UK rights were purchased by Griggs Group who re-shaped the heel and added the yellow stitching. This is the distinctive look that is still known today.
