Filco Supermarkets, or Filco Foods as it’s known, started trading in 1946. It originally opened as a small convenience store in Llantwit Major, the owner was Phillip Jones. You could leave a shopping list and the goods would be packed and then delivered to your home. By 1964 it had moved premises and became a self-service store. It actually traded for a while under a Spar franchise. They opened several more stores and moved away from Spar. By 1998 the chain had become known as Filco Supermarkets. Today there are approximately a dozen of these stores across Wales.
Filco Supermarkets remain a convenience store chain. Today they are part of the Nisa group and proudly sell an impressive array of products, including alcohol, fresh meats and fruits, dairy, and plenty of canned goods. The products they sell are sourced locally and the company remains invested in the local community. This is part of the reason they haven’t moved outside of Wales.
