Harris Morris started the Morris Furniture Company in 1884. As a trained carpenter with experience creating furniture Morris knew what he was doing. He instantly built a successful business. Within twenty years the company was supplying furniture for ocean liners. Just six years later he started to build office furniture and by 1920 they were creating seats for cinemas, specifically where the first talking movie was shown. In the 1930s the company made the furniture for the Cunard Queen Mary ocean liner and the furniture for its replacement, the QE2, in 1968. His son joined the company in 1938 with modern approaches to laminated wood and how to shape tables and chairs. Harris’s grandson joined Morris Furniture in 1973 and started to target the domestic market. The success continues and today they are recognized as Britain’s biggest name in furniture.
