The Original Penguin story started in 1955 when Abbot Pederson was stuck waiting for a flight. The subsequent delay led to several whiskeys and an opportune purchase of a large stuffed penguin. He named it Pete but unfortunately knocked its head off during the flight. The air hostess tied it back on with a necktie and said he would look good on a shirt. Abbot agreed and added it to the new shirts he was creating. A legend was born. Since then the penguin has appeared on a host of clothing and has been worn by many of the most famous people in the world. The business was purchased by Perry Ellis International in 1996 and is now known across the globe.
Initially Pete the penguin appeared on a golf shirt, today the array of clothing offered, with the iconic logo stitched into it, has expanded considerably. They now offer t-shirts, shirts, swimwear, golfing apparel, sweatshirts, jumpers, jackets, and an array of accessories. This includes underwear, socks, hats, and bags. Alongside this, Original Penguin offers a selection of shoes for every occasion, ensuring you always look the part. It should be noted that the range of clothing is still aimed at men.
In keeping with many great designers and icons, Original Penguin has very few of its own shops, just six in the UK. Instead, they have agreements with some of the most popular and largest department stores, such as House of Fraser and Next.
