It was 1873 and George Bromley had just married Elizabeth. She was the daughter of Albion Russell whose father, John Clifford Russell, had started his own shoemaking business in 1820. George joined the family business and the name became Russell & Bromley. The first store to carry the joint name was the family store in Eastbourne. That was in 1880. By the end of the century, a second store was opened by George’s son. This led to a period of expansion which ended in the middle of the twentieth century.
