The Aquascutum story began in 1851. This was when John Emary opened his menswear shop in Regent Street, London. The name of the company was created in 1853 when he became the first person to produce waterproof wool and patented the idea. Aquascutum is Latin for ‘watershield’. The company went on to produce officers' coats for the Crimean War and trench coats for all soldiers.
